2022 tax year
When are taxes due for the 2022 tax year?
The deadline for filing your 2022 taxes was the federal tax filing deadline, April 18, 2023. This was also the last day you could file for a six-month extension.
The federal tax filing deadline usually falls on April 15 of each year. If the date falls on a weekend or holiday, it gets pushed to the following weekday. In 2023, April 15 was a Saturday and the following Monday was a federal holiday, so it got pushed to April 18.
Different return methods have different deadlines
- If you filed a paper return: The IRS will consider your return on time if you mailed it by the due date of April 18, 2023. The return must have been correctly addressed with enough postage, and postmarked.
- If you filed an electronic return: The IRS will consider your return on time if you electronically submitted your return by April 18, 2023. Your local time zone will be used to determine the time and date it was submitted.

When are 2022 taxes due if I requested an extension?
If you requested a tax extension by filing Form 4868 by April 18, 2023, your extended return date is October 16, 2023. A tax deadline extension does not give you more time to pay your tax bill, it only gives you more time to file. The IRS expects you to pay your tax bill in full by April 18, 2023. Any amount owing after the deadline is subject to interest and penalties.
What if I don’t know how much I need to pay yet?
The IRS will accept an estimation of your owed tax payments. As long as you pay at least 90% of your actual tax liability, interest and penalties may be waived.
What happens if I miss the deadline?
If you miss the tax filing deadline and do not file for an extension, you’ll incur penalties and interest. The late-filing penalty is usually around 5% of the amount owed for every month that it is late, up to a maximum of 25% of your tax bill. On top of the late-filing penalty, the amount owed will also accrue interest. You may also miss out on tax refunds owed to you, if you any year’s tax return is not filed for longer than 3 years.
